Shakyamuni in earth-witness posture, cast by the lost-wax method and then chased by hand for three days to bring up the robe folds and the hair curls. The face is cold-gilded in the traditional manner.

About this piece
Lost-wax is a one-shot process. The figure is modelled in beeswax, packed in clay, and fired until the wax runs out; molten copper goes into the cavity left behind and the clay mould is then broken away. The mould cannot be reused, so nothing about a lost-wax casting is repeatable.
What comes out of the mould is rough. The three days of chasing afterwards — punching, scraping and burnishing the surface with hardened steel tools — is where the piece actually gets its detail.
The face is cold gold, a paste of gold powder in glue applied by hand and burnished; it is the traditional finish and it is not the same as electroplating. Base is sealed in the usual way.

Care & keeping
Wipe with a dry cloth. A darkening patina is normal on hand-raised bronze and many owners prefer it; if you want it bright, use a little tamarind paste or a proprietary brass polish and buff dry. Never put it in a dishwasher.
