About this piece
Mithila work fills every square centimetre; the empty space you would expect around a figure is instead packed with hatching, dots and vine. Figures are outlined twice, with the inner line finer than the outer.
Traditionally this was wall and floor painting done by women for weddings and festivals, and only moved onto paper in the 1960s when a drought made selling the work a livelihood.
