Yak down is combed from the animal's undercoat in spring. It is naturally water-repellent and holds heat when damp, which is why it has clothed people at 4,000 metres for a very long time.

Expect a slightly prickly hand for the first few weeks. It softens substantially with use and washing and ends up beautifully broken in. If you want soft on day one, buy pashmina instead — this is a different animal in every sense.

Hand wash cold with a mild wool detergent, or dry clean. Do not wring — press the water out flat and dry away from direct sun. Store folded with cedar rather than mothballs.
