A full-size meditation bowl raised by hand from a single disc of seven-metal bronze. Strike it and the fundamental settles around a low F, with two overtones that keep unfolding for close to forty seconds. The hammer marks across the outer wall are the record of how it was made.

About this piece
Four smiths work a bowl like this at once, swinging in rotation against a stake anvil while the bronze is repeatedly reheated. It takes most of a day and the sound cannot be predicted — it emerges from the thickness the smiths happen to leave in the wall, which is why every hand-beaten bowl has its own voice and why they are tuned by ear at the end rather than to a chart.
Seven-metal alloy is the traditional Himalayan recipe: copper and tin as the working body, with small amounts of gold, silver, iron, lead and zinc. The tin content is what gives the long, complex decay.
Supplied with a hardwood striker and a hand-stitched cotton ring cushion. The bowl plays both struck and rimmed.

Care & keeping
Wipe with a dry cloth. A darkening patina is normal on hand-raised bronze and many owners prefer it; if you want it bright, use a little tamarind paste or a proprietary brass polish and buff dry. Never put it in a dishwasher.
