The two-headed barrel drum at the centre of Nepali folk music, carried across the body on a strap and played with both hands. Heads are tuned with khari — the traditional black paste.

About this piece
The shell is carved from a single block of khirro and hollowed by hand; the two heads are different diameters and are laced together with leather thongs running the length of the drum so tightening one affects the other.
The black patch at the centre of each head is khari, a paste of rice and iron filings applied in layers. It weights the membrane and drops the pitch, and it is what gives the madal its distinctive dead-toned low side against a bright high side.
Supplied with a woven cotton shoulder strap. It arrives roughly in tune; the lacing takes fine adjustment by hand.

Care & keeping
Keep it out of damp and away from direct heat. Hide heads slacken in humidity and tighten in dry air — that is normal and is adjusted at the lacing. Never wet the khari patches.
