About this piece
A sarangi is hollowed out of a single piece of wood — neck, body and pegbox all one — which is why the wood has to be flawless and why a maker rejects most blanks. The belly is goat hide, stretched wet and allowed to shrink onto the body.
It is fretless and played by stopping the strings with the fingernails rather than the pads, which is the hardest thing about learning it.
The Gandharvas were Nepal's travelling musician-newscarriers, and this instrument is inseparable from that history. Supplied with a bow and a spare set of strings.

Care & keeping
Loosen the bow after playing. Keep out of damp and away from radiators. The hide belly will loosen slightly in a wet season and recover.
